– left jurisdiction without permission
Berbice-based Magistrate Geeta Chandan has been suspended for two weeks by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for leaving the jurisdiction without permission during working hours.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Magistrate Chandan had travelled to Suriname to attend a funeral.
She had reportedly made attempts to seek permission but was unable to make contact with the Chancellor of the Judiciary Carl Singh, but did leave messages with his Secretary.
This newspaper has been reliably informed that Magistrate Chandan was on the ferry bound for Suriname when the Chancellor saw her and subsequently lodged a complaint with the JSC.
She has since been suspended for two weeks and docked one week’s salary.
Magistrate Chandan was suspended effective September 7 and has since challenged the decision in the High Court.
Kaieteur News further understands that she has secured the services of Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes.
