The Guyana government yesterday accredited two new ambassadors from countries which are among its most important allies in development – Brazil and Cuba.
The new Brazilian ambassador, Luiz Gilberto Seixas de Andrade, comes to Guyana on the eve of the official opening of the Takutu Bridge at Lethem. The border bridge will be commissioned by President Bharrat Jagdeo and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday.
Just after President Jagdeo accepted his Letters of Credence as the new ambassador, Mr. de Andrade told the media that the bridge is an instrument of development that will deepen economic cooperation between Guyana and Brazil.
He said he not only sees potential for increased trade, but also stronger cultural ties. The new ambassador hinted that President Lula could announce developments in Brazil’s stated intention to pave the road from Lethem to Linden, thus allowing for easier traffic from the state of Roraima to Georgetown.
The new Brazilian Ambassador comes to Guyana from his country’s embassy in Rome. Over the last three decades, he has held several diplomatic posts for his country abroad including New York, Buenos Aires, London, Montivideo, and Copenhagen.
The new Cuban ambassador, Raul Gortazar Marrero, has had several years experience in dealing with Latin America and the Caribbean.
Marrero comes to Guyana to seek new levels of cooperation between the two countries. This month, another group of scholarship students is expected to leave for Cuba, adding to the hundreds who are already there though an agreement inked between President Jagdeo and then Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Cuban help has allowed Guyana to set up a modern ophthalmology hospital which is providing free eye care, including surgery, to anyone who needs it in Guyana.
The facility, located at Port Mourant in Berbice, Jagdeo has said will opens its doors to free eye care and surgeries to nationals of the Caribbean Community once the local demand is taken care of.
Jagdeo giving Exxon 102 cent to collect 2 cent.
