Fifties from Jacobs, Barrington spur MSC to win
DEMERARA ZONE – National players Shemroy Barrington and Steven Jacobs hit half-centuries in a century opening stand as host Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) beat Nandy Park on Sunday in the latest round of the Demerara zone’s Neal & Massy National 40-overs first division cricket competition.
Barrington, who missed the opening round, followed up his century on Saturday with another solid performance and struck 5 four and 5 sixes in 51 as MSC made 148-1 in 20 overs chasing the 147 all out in 36 overs made by the East Bank side.
Barrington and Skipper Jacobs, who smashed 9 fours and 2 sixes in his unbeaten 76, put together 111 for the first wicket before Barrington hit Rajesh Singh to deep mid-wicket.
Danny Narayan (9*) was with Jacobs at the end after Trevor Liverpool (42) and Terry Bandoo (23) offered some resistance for Nandy Park as left-arm spinner Damian Vantull enhanced his chances of a Demerara call-up with 3-22. Barrington had 2-10 with his medium pace.
At Uitvlugt, home team Mavericks defeated city side Transport Sports Club (TSC) by 2 wickets after losing to East Coast side Enterprise the day before.
Travis Blyden missed a fifty by 2 runs while Kellon Carmichael (28) and Shane Cummings (24) chipped in with the bat for TSC who made 154 in 38.5 overs.
Amit Jairam captured 3-30 and Anil Cooper 2-29 for the West Demerara side who replied with 155-8 in 35.4 overs.
Jairam led the way with 38 while Cooper made 29 for Mavericks as Marcus Watkins had 3-27 and Kevin Ross 2-18 for the losers.
At Camp Road, Everest continued their unbeaten run by beating Lusignan by 5 runs on a track with variable bounce. Everest made 145-9 off their 40 overs before dismissing Lusignan for 140 in 39.4 overs to clinch a narrow win.
Former West Indies Under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika made 40 and got support from Joseph Perry (30) and West Indies Under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan (22) after former Test opener Ryan Ramdass, who returned to local cricket on Saturday with a century, fell for 9.
Left-arm spinner Narvin Singh took 4-16 for the East Coast combination before Vishnu Ramjeet missed his half-century by 4 runs and Surendra Deosarran (38) and Singh (23) just failed to see their team across the line.
Left-arm spinner Javed Rasheed again opened the bowling and captured 3-13 while Skipper Abhilash Dookie took 2-10 for Everest.
At Enterprise, the home team registered their second win over the weekend by beating GDF by 116 runs after making 222-7 and dismissing the Soldiers for 138.
Parmanand Dindyal smashed an unbeaten 81 while Mahendra Balkissoon made 53 for the East Coast team even their lone First-Class player Zaheer Mohamed fell for a single.
Former Guyana First-Class player Roderick Lovell had 3-29 and got back up from Travis Gilbert who took 2-35.
Colin McPherson scored 49, Lovell 25 not out and Vejai Singh 21 for the Army as Raj Mangal picked up 3 wickets.
At Bourda, DCC beat GCC by 110 runs after making 244 and dismissing the hosts for 134 in 35 overs.
West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith top scored with 44 and got support from the explosive Andrew Lyght Junior (38), Leroy Bristol (30), Derwin Christian (25) and Jamal Hinckson (26) as Treon Forde, Chindanand Shivram and West Indies player Leon Johnson took 2 wickets each.
Johnson again failed to build on a ‘start’ at this level and fell for 41 but only Elon Fernandes (37) and Gavin Singh (17) of the other batsmen reached 15 as Griffith completed a day at the office with 4-43. Former first-class off-spinner Gavin Nedd had 2-12.
Meanwhile, the DCB informed that Saturday’s match between Lusignan and Mavericks at Enmore ended in dispute and the matter is being investigated by the DCB.
It is understood that Lusignan made 162 and Mavericks were on 158-9 in the final over when an appeal was turned down. According to Chairman of the DCB Competitions Committee he was informed that the Lusignan team walked off the field after the decision was turned down. (Sean Devers)
