– ‘Delinquent’ fourth former to be relocated
By Gary Eleazar
The apparent reinstatement of a fourth form student of The Bishops’ High School yesterday irked teachers of the school to the point that they staged a sit-in, in protest of the action by the Ministry of Education to override a decision which those at the institution felt was necessary for good order to prevail.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the student who is the son of an Army Officer had failed promotion examinations for two consecutive years and according to the school’s rules, the student is no longer eligible to return.
However, the student turned up at the school yesterday for the first time since the new school year commenced and was at first denied entry to a classroom and when school officials queried what prompted the young man’s action (returning after being expelled) it was revealed that the Ministry had apparently overruled the school’s decision, citing a rule that none of the officials at the school were aware of.
Sources close to the school related that the young man was a student embroiled in a series of allegations such as theft of cell phones and money.
The Head Teacher at the time could not deal with the matter given that another engagement had warranted her attention and the student was asked to wait in the lounge of her office, but when she left he went to his class boasting that nothing could be done to him.
The teachers were adamant that they were not returning to their desks until the student officially was denied entrance to the school.
The action yesterday saw hundreds of students at one of the country’s premier teaching institutions left with no teachers and having to use their own initiative to spend a productive day.
They were however attended to by the school’s Prefects. This newspaper has learnt that the issue has since been resolved, in that there was a commitment by the Ministry to have the student transferred to another school following several meetings as well as other forms of communication involving school officials, board members and ministry officials.
The teachers also met with Colwyn King, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, who in turn met with Ministry officials, and confirmed that they have promised to have the alleged delinquent student
