Deserted on Saturday by their National players who opted to participate in a Private 20/20 cricket competition instead of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) National 40 overs Neal & Massy 40 1st Division Competition, Albion were beaten by one wicket by host Skeldon.
A release from the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) said ‘After the four top Albion players; Sewnarine Chattergoon, Narsingh Deonarine, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul opted to miss Albion Community Centre’s match against Skeldon Community Centre it was not surprising that Skeldon eked out a slim one-wicket win.’
While Berbice Cricket Board Vice-President David Black had said that the Board would monitor the player’s priority if they decided to leave the ‘official cricket’ to play in an unsanctioned Private competition, the GCB or BCB has no contracts with the players who are legally free to play in whatever competitions they deem as more important.
Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar first-class players Esuan Crandon and Assad Fudadin also neglected their club on Saturday to play at the Stadium.
A GCB official said he was disappointed that the young players show very little loyalty or comment to GCB cricket.
“Of course it is good for the players to earn something from their talent but when you leave official cricket Board matches to play in private competitions it shows clearly where your priority is. I hope the various selectors take the player’s attitude into account when they pick teams. I have no say in the selection process but if I had I would pick the players who want to play instead of those who seem bent on just using the cricket for their personal gains,” the official, who requested anonymity, said.
Many in Berbice feel the BCB need to exert more control over its cricket and discourage any disrespect from players.
“Look at Albion! They were against the DJ Stress 20/20 competition although that was sanctioned by the BCB but yet they wanted their match on Saturday to be postponed due to the 20/20 at the Stadium. This is double standard,” a concerned Canje fan told Kaieteur Sport on Sunday. It was also pointed out that the BCB has selected Andre Percival in their Inter-County squad although he has decided not to play in the National Neal & Massy competition in Berbcie.
Percival is representing a West Demerara side in the Demerara zone of the Neal & Massy competition and another fan said he would not be surprising if the selectors did not know this since they are rarely present at Berbcie first division matches.
The belated inclusion of former West Indies player Richard Ramdeen and Anthony D’Andrade in the Berbice squad despite their obvious talent and form, also suggests that all is not well with Berbice cricket.
