Brilliant bowling from Berbice Under-19 off-spinning all-rounder Joemal La Fleur spearheaded New Amsterdam/Canje into the final of the 2009 Republic Bank Under-17 2-innings One-Day Inter-Zone Cricket Competition for Berbice teams.
In the semi-final which was played at the Blairmont Ground, New Amsterdam/Canje took first innings points from West Berbice in the match which ended in a draw, thus earning the right to advance. West Berbice won the toss and chose to bat first with Sardat Harripaul and Wazid Subhan putting on 28 for the first wicket.
LaFleur struck in his first over by removing Subhan (3) and Deodat Singh caught for a duck. Harripaul and Quacy Mc Pherson put on 54 for the 3rd wicket before LaFleur removed Harripaul for 42. Seven runs later, off-spinner Kevin Ramdeen got rid of Mc Pherson (24) at 89-4.
LaFleur continued his demolition job, picking three consecutive wickets to leave West Berbcie on 100-7. After Kevin Ramdeen (2-43) struck at 101-8, LaFleur cleaned up the last two batsmen to leave West Berbice 115 all out in their first innings.
When New Amsterdam/Canje began their reply, they were given a start of 27 runs by Tregon Henry and Guyana Under-17 batsman Jamally Odle before Odle fell to left arm spinner Sherwyn Peterkin. Ramdeen and Henry added 41 before Ramdeen (18) was caught behind off offspinner Rajiv Kissoon, Henry (25) was bowled by Peterkin and LaFleur was run out for 5 as New Amsterdam/Canje slipped from 68-1 to 83-4. However, Devendra Jainabi took New Amsterdam/Canje out of danger by putting on 48 for the 5th wicket before Jainabi fell to left arm spinner Renalto Grovesnor for 32 at 131-5.
Linden Austin and Udesh Imrit added 27 before Austin was bowled for 30 at 158-6 at which point the day’s play ended with New Amsterdam/Canje advancing by virtue of their first innings win.
They will now meet with Lower Corentyne in the final.
