Santos Football Club demonstrated remarkable resilience with a come from behind victory over Conquerors FC and lifted the 2009 Courts Pee Wee football championship when that tournament concluded at the Banks DIH Ground, Thirst Park, Saturday evening last.
The battle for third place was also intense as the Renaissance and Uprising Football Clubs threw down the gauntlet. Jermaine Beckles opened Uprising’s account in the 19th minute but Kester Grant equalized in the 35th to keep the game alive for Renaissance. With no additional goals, regulation time ended with the score leveled at 1-1. The two teams went after each other during extra time in a keenly contested fight for honours but failed to score that decisive goal before the whistle, necessitating penalty kicks.
In the end, Uprising prevailed 3-2. Kester Grant, Akosi Jarvis and Shamar Harvey netted for the winners while Kevin Bothers and Jermaine Beckles netted for Renaissance.
The game between Santos and Conquerors was truly deserving of championship status. The two teams whet after each other and it was Conquerors’ striker, Ryan Hackett who slammed in the first goal for his team in the 19th minute. Twenty minutes later, Job Caesar plastered Conquerors custodian to equalize the situation and send his supporters into wild celebration.
The final whistle sounded with the two teams on a 1-1 stalemate. The intense battle spilled over into extra time and despite superb plays from both teams, it was the Santos players that held their nerves and slammed in the decider off the boot of Alwyn Williams in the 42nd minute.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the main sponsors, Courts, Clyde DeHaas said that he was extremely pleased with the organizational skill exhibited by the administrators. He also praised the performances of the various teams. “During the championships I have seen four teams in fierce rivalry and among you I have seen many future champions. I wish to encourage you to keep on practicing and maintain the high level of discipline exhibited throughout the competition and you are going to be successful in your future endeavours,” he exhorted the players.
Mr. DeHaas further committed his organization to future sponsorship deals. “We are extremely pleased with the way the tournament was played and I assure you that we are in this for the long haul,” he assured.
Meanwhile, President of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA), Troy Mendonca dubbed the finals as a fitting end to an exciting tournament. He was especially grateful to furniture giants, Courts for their corporate assistance. Mendonca also commended the players for their performances even as he implored the corporate society for future support.
Thomas United and Pele shared the honours for the Most Disciplined Teams while Ronnel Roberts was adjudged the best goalkeeper. Ryan Hackett and Zab Caesar carted off the prize for the most prolific scorers. Caesar also won the Most Valuable Player prize. (Michael Benjamin)
