Two Fridays after she was rescued from a burial ground, the four-year-old who was unlawfully detained by a 28-year-old stranger cries constantly, is terrified of being left alone, and appears to be in constant pain.
And her distraught mother says that the ordeal of watching her daughter’s suffering is something she wants no other parent to go through.
“I would never wish fuh this to happen to any other mother,” the distraught woman told Kaieteur News yesterday.
“I wouldn’t even wish this pun me worse enemy…is so bad this thing bad.”
The four-year-old girl was reportedly abducted from her parents’ Leonora, West Coast Demerara home between Sunday (August 9) and Monday (August 10) last.
Police had initially suspected that her stepfather, with whom her mother had previously lived at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast of Demerara, had made off with the child. He was arrested but eventually cleared of the crime.
It was not until last week Friday that residents of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, discovered that the child was allegedly being confined by another man, 28-year-old Sherwin Lewis, who has since been charged taken before the court and remanded to prison.
But according to the woman her daughter has not been the same since she returned home.
She explained that the child has on several occasions begged her not to send her back and has not slept through an entire night.
In fact, the woman related that the child cries and screams for no less than 16 hours a day, but seems unable to describe what she is going through.
“She does just holla and cry…but sometimes like no tears falling but she going through the motion like she crying. Is like she in pain and I don’t know what to do. I does ask she, ‘what happening baby?’ But like she just can’t tell me,” the mother lamented.
She disclosed that the child’s tummy has become abnormally stiff and she has a “sickly” appearance. Additionally, the child’s mother disclosed that she refuses to be left alone and is very reluctant to face strangers.
According to the particulars of the case, Lewis detained the four-year-old, with the intent of depriving her parents of possession of her. The mother related that she is patiently waiting for the day when the perpetrator is punished for his heinous crime.
“I don’t know what I can say but I hope that this man rot in jail. I hope he never get to see the light of day and come out and do this same thing to somebody else child. It would be wrong if they let he out.”
Magistrate Fazil Azeez, who had presided at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court when the matter came up last week Monday had indicated that based on information from an ongoing investigation into the matter, additional charges are likely to be laid against Lewis.
The accused is expected to make another court appearance on Monday.
