Former Guyana Under-19 captain Eugene La Fleur continued his good form with the bat when he hit 63 to help unbeaten Bermine to their fourth consecutive victory in the 4th round of the Berbice Zone of the 2009 Neal and Massy National First Division 40-Over Cricket Competition on Sunday.
Bermine dismissed Edinburgh for 154 before La Fleur, who opened the batting, scored 63 (his 3rd half century) to set up the Bermine win.
It was not all easy sailing for the New Amsterdam side who were well placed on 131-3 before off-spinner Mark Sampson (4-33) picked up four consecutive wickets to rock the boat. He removed La Fleur, Julian Moore (3), Keion De Jesus (30) and Charles Shepherd (0) as Bermine slumped to 148-7 to the delight of the vocal home fans.
Joemal La Fleur was then run out for a duck and Derick Cadogan fell for 1 to leave Bermine on 151-9, still 4 away from victory.
With the pressure mounting on both sides and the spectators on their feet Bermine, helped by crucial wides, scraped home. Ralph Chakalall supported with 2-32 for the East Bank Berbcie side.
Edinburgh’s total was build around good batting from Shafiek Khan (45) and Ralph Chakalall (18) as pacer Cadogan took 2-30.
At Scottsburg, Scottsburg United beat Skeldon Community Centre by 59 runs with Mark Lionel leading the way with 52. Anthony Seeraj (36) and national under-19 players Alex Amsterdam (26) and Anthony Bramble (22) offered support as Scotsburg United made 188 in 38 overs. The off-spin pair of Delvin Maynard (3-15) and Andrew Saul (2-27) did the damage with the ball for Skeldon who fell for 129.
Saul, the brother of National sprint champion and Police batsman Michael Saul, stroked 8 fours in an entertaining 56 but got no support from the others as pacer Errol Byass captured 5-37 and Peter Grimes 3-34.
Hosts Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar were another Team that came under severe pressure from one of the minnows. After struggling at 33-3 and then 56-5 RHTWSB were bowled them out for 122 in 37 Overs by Upper Corentyne.
However when Upper Corentyne batted, RHTWSB’s first-class pacer Esaun Crandon picked up four consecutive wickets to leave them tottering at 33-4 on his way to figures of 4-26.
A sixth wicket partnership of 34 between Kumar Mathura (27) and Romel Dowlat halted the slide but off-spinner Assad Fudadin (3-6) and Berbice Under-15 right arm leg-spinner Shawn Perreira (2-8) saw the visitors rapidly descending from 82-5 to 97 all out as they lost by 25 runs. Kumar Mathura (27) and Romel Dowlat (13) offered token resistance for Upper Corentyne.
Dominic Rickie (22) and Jason Sinclair (21) were the main scorers for RHTWSB as medium pacer Chris Bollers grabbed 3-27, off-spinner Bheem Singh (2-11), off-spinner Chatterpaul Lionel (2-15) and medium pacer Omesh Khemraj (2-43).
At Albion, Albion beat Port Mourant by 33 runs after making 153 all out in 28 overs with Guyana under-19 player Jonathan Foo top scoring with 49.
Doodnauth Lallbeharry (33) supported as off-spinner Sameer Khan had 3-32 while off-spinners Rajiv Ivan (3-36) and Stephen Latcha (2-29) also bowled well. Port Mourant were bowled out for 120 in 36.2 Overs with Sasenarine Ernest making 36. National right-arm leg-spinner Devendra Bishu 2-16, Guyana left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul 2-31 and off-spinner Ranga Lachigadu 2-21 for the winners.
Meanwhile, Blairmont Community Centre failed to show up at the Rose Hall ground in Canje for their match against Police.
This was after the West Berbcie side had unsuccessfully tried to have that match postponed. West Berbice had claimed that injuries to some players including their captain and national pacer Brendon Bess and the unavailability of some others who played against Bermine on Saturday was the reason for their request.
A walk-over has not yet been granted to Police and the Competitions Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board will investigate the matter.
