A furniture manufacturer is counting losses close to $40M, after a fire of unknown origin destroyed his bond at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, early yesterday morning.
Investigators will now have their work cut out to determine what caused the blaze that flattened the Highway 401 Furniture Store bond, since neighbours could give no definitive clue as to the origin.
The blaze started at about 01:30 hours, and fueled by furniture-making materials such as foam, leatherette and wood, it quickly engulfed the building.
Neighbours stood helplessly as the fire consumed the structure and could only try to save the neighbouring properties from destruction before fire tenders arrived.
“We empty de gutter fuh save dem house round hey. De fire tender come and dem water done fast, fast,” a Mon Repos resident told this newspaper.
During their initial investigations, police heard several accounts of what could have caused the fire.
A police source told this newspaper that one man reported seeing green flames emanating from the building as if someone was welding.
Another neighbour to the western side of the bond told investigators that she heard what sounded like a sparking emanating from the electricity pole in front of the bond, while another resident reported seeing two suspicious cars in the area shortly before the building was engulfed in flames.
For businessman Mohamed Nazim Khan, the loss is devastating.
He told Kaieteur News that he was at home sleeping when his son woke him up and told him that there was a fire at the bond, which is situated not too far from where he resides.
Khan said that he was a little confused initially, but he subsequently made his way to the site where his worst fears were confirmed.
“Now we started stocking because the Christmas holiday is approaching. We had a lot of raw material, leatherette, fabric. Mostly, those things are stored here,” the businessman told this newspaper. Although the establishment was insured, Khan said that the setback is what will concern him the most.
“This is not a fire you would expect to happen, because there are not many electrical appliances in the bond,” he said.
There was no security at the bond at the time, since according to Khan, he never felt the need for any.
Investigators were expected to revisit the fire scene with the aim of establishing the cause.
