Police have now detained six people, including a woman, as investigations intensified into the murder of 80-year-old Kharpattie Shivnauth, called ‘Ma’, who was found nude, gagged and bound to her bed on Friday night.
Among those arrested is a woman who had allegedly shown an interest in the elderly lady’s bank account and four young men who are former friends of a grandson of the victim.
The sixth man is a neighbour who was allegedly seen acting suspiciously near Shivnauth’s home on the night she is believed to have been slain.
Shivnauth had reportedly chased him from her yard about a week ago when he had tried to sell her a gold chain.
A source told Kaieteur News that the man was deported from Trinidad some time ago.
All the suspects are from La Grange, West Bank Demerara, and some of them even reside in the same street as the murdered woman.
At present, police are attempting to identify all the persons with a motive for killing Shivnauth.
According to a source, the detained woman and Shivnauth had fallen out over money the woman allegedly owed Shivnauth.
The source also said that
Shivnauth, who lived alone at Lot 66 Independence Road, La Grange, was found at around 19:00 hrs by her son and other relatives.
She was naked and bound to her bed with strips of cloth. A granddaughter also said that a dress was stuffed into her mouth.
The primary motive appeared to be robbery, since the killer(s) had stripped their victim of a pair of gold earrings, gold bangles and a ring that she always wore.
The victim’s son believes that the killer(s) gained entry via an eastern window.
Relatives believe ‘Ma’ was slain on Thursday night, shortly after returning from a La Grange Mandir.
