Lead GT into final
By Edison Jefford
Courts Pacesetters launched a title defence in the Brusche’s Basketball Classic last night at the Mackenzie Sports Club court when they completely outplayed Georgetown rival, Dyna’s Ravens in the first semi-final of the doubleheader Friday night.
Pacesetters comfortably won 62-50 owing to good defence that suffocated Ravens’ offence in the Mining Town. Last year’s hero, Stephon Gillis, as predicted, rose to the occasion to lead Courts on offence with a game high 19 points.
Naylon Loncke and replacement guard, Hugh Arthur were the next best scorers for Pacesetters in game with 10 points each. The Courts-sponsored outfit had taken a commanding 50-36 lead after the first half expired with Ravens obviously struggling.
Marlon Rodrigues was Ravens’ best scorer with 16 points as both Kevin Lawrence and Damian Liverpool, who were among the points in the first game, failed to get into double figures in the grossly aggressive and physical encounter.
Pacesetters played the national champions, Wismar Pistons last night in the final after the Linden team easily trampled on Bulls with a 66-44 points win. Shane Lewis was the only player from on the losing team with double figures on 12 points.
On the other hand, Pistons had five players in double figures with Trevor Profitt leading the way with 15 points. Nevin Grenville had 13 points while Alista Bynoe, Quincy Jones and Dwight Cooper ended with 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
The winner of the 2009 Brusche’s Classic takes home $100,000 while second and third place get $60,000 and $40,000 in that order. Pacesetters are the defending champs after the winning the inaugural competition last year in Linden.
