Two separate early morning accidents on the main East Coast Demerara Highway yesterday, has left a 53-year old man dead and a 12 year old boy in a critical condition at the intensive care unit of the Georgetown Hospital.
Balkissoon Bipta of Lusignan was killed on the spot after being struck down by a speeding car on the Lusignan Public Road around 07:10 hours yesterday.
Police stated that their investigations have revealed that motor car PKK 1656, driven by Kennard Liverpool of Belladrum, West Coast Berbice was proceeding east on the northern side of the road when Bipta who was riding a pedal cycle proceeding in the same direction but on the opposite side suddenly turned into the path of the car and was struck down.
Bipta, the caretaker of the Lusignan Community Centre Ground sustained a gaping wound to his right side and parts of his body were seen on the parapet where the accident occurred and on the front ode of the badly damaged car.
But eyewitness reports indicated that the driver may have been the errant party.
And judging from the wound on the right side of Bipta’s body, their version appears to be correct.
One man told this newspaper that Bipta was struck down from behind and the driver of the car ended up stopping several yards away before reversing to the scene of the accident.
“He de going fuh buy fish and done cross de road. Ow me God!” cried his sister, Chandrapattie Kanhai.
She said that she was at home when a man came and told her that Bipta was struck down by a car.
According to Kanhai, she inquired if her brother was dead and was answered in the affirmative.
Eyewitnesses initially believed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol since they reported that he fell while marking the spot where the accident occurred.
However, police conducted a breathalyzer test and found that he was below the prescribed limit.
And earlier yesterday morning, 12-year old Vivekanand Rudradeo, of lot 1Ogle Airstrip road was taking his usual early morning ride with his father around 05:30a.m when a car struck them both from behind and sped away.
The two injured persons were assisted by public spirited persons to seek medical attention at the Georgetown Hospital, where Vivekanand Rudradeo was immediately admitted.
This newspaper understands that the child who is scheduled to attend his first day at secondary school next week is in a critical condition suffering from head injuries.
Unfortunately for the driver, the police have been able to retrieve his licence plate bearing the serial number PKK 5274 which fell off as a result of the accident.
However, so far he has not been arrested. Bipta’s death has taken the road fatality figure on the East Coast of Demerara to nine.
