Coming from an institution which produced Test greats Clive Lloyd, Roy Fredericks and Lance Gibbs, Trevon Griffith’s selection on the West Indies Under-19 Team for the Regional One Day Championship in Guyana in October is a step in the right direction.
The pugnacious left-hander joins several DCC clubmates who donned the Maroon Cap for the West Indies at the international U-19 Level.
Mark Harper and the late Andrew Lyght set the tone for the prestigious Queenstown institution in 1976 when they were included in the Timur Mohamed-led X1 that engaged young England at Queens Park Oval in a three-day youth Test and a limited overs match.
Off-spinner Kishore Persaud was the club’s next West Indies Under-19 Ambassador when he toured with the Austin Whyte-led delegation to the United Kingdom in July 1978.
When young England visited the Caribbean again in January 1980 to engage young West Indies, DCC was represented by another off-spinning All-Rounder; Queens College’s Roger Harper.
During the summer of 1982 Roger Harper became the first DCC player to Captain the West Indies U-19 team, when young West Indies toured the United Kingdom.
DCC’s next West Indies U-19 ambassador was Keith Semple, the former St Stanislaus College right-hander who was part of the Sherwin Campbell-led delegation to Canada in September of 1989.
When the West Indies U-19 last toured the United Kingdom July/August of 2001, DCC was represented by Rayon Thomas and Vishal Arjune.
Another incentive for young Griffith is that all of those mentioned above went on to play first-class cricket with Roger Harper and Semple representing the West Indies at International Level.
Trevon the sky is the limit you could not ask for more Illustrious Predecessors.
