The Guyana Defence Force yesterday reported that it has administratively dismissed with dishonour, the three murder accused Coast Guardsmen – Lead Rating Sherwyn Harte and Ordinary Ratings Deon Greenidge and Delon Gordon.
The trio confessed to the murder of 23-year-old Dweive Kant Ramdass of Bartica. An account of the incident reveals that on Thursday last, the three soldiers abandoned their operational location at Fort Island. They confessed to have ordered Ramdass out of a boat in which he was travelling and into their Coast Guard vessel, following which, they admittedly robbed Ramdass of a large quantity of cash, strangled him and later dumped his body in the vicinity of Caiman Hole – an area in the Essequibo River near Fort Island.
Last Saturday, Ramdass’s partly decomposed body was found in the said area. The murder accused have been remanded to prison and are now awaiting trial.
The GDF Chief-of-Staff Commodore Gary Best has publicly condemned the criminal acts of the three rogue soldiers which he stressed have sought to tarnish the Army’s principles and ideals. He also emphasized that those acts do not define the character of the Force. The Chief-of-Staff has reiterated to his Officers and Ranks the need for suspicious behaviour by any member of the force to be reported, and where necessary, to also report the appropriate disciplinary actions taken.
The Guyana Defence Force in a statement indicated that it regrets the unfortunate incident, but remains highly committed to ensuring the display of a high degree of discipline and professional conduct by all of its Officers and Ranks.
