The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) through its Deputy Mayor, Robert Williams, has promised to commence an investigation to determine the origin of unwholesome waste matter that is being dumped in the Princes Street Canal.
According to some Charlestown residents, and persons employed at entities situated in proximity to the junction of Princes and Adelaide Streets, Charlestown, the dumping of garbage has been occurring for more than a year and has created a very unhealthy situation in the environment.
During a visit to the area yesterday, this newspaper was able to observe clusters of decomposing, worm-infested chicken skin lining a section of the canal. At that very section of the waterway, staffers and volunteers of Red Thread, a Non-Governmental Organisation situated in the vicinity, could be seen attempting to remove the unsightly waste from which a pungent stench was emanating.
And the cleaning efforts have become a regular feature, according to Mark Ross, a volunteer with the Human Rights entity.
Ross disclosed that based on information from residents, the waste is usually dumped into the canal as early as 05:00 hours by a food establishment within the area. According to him, every day the waste can be seen moving downstream from its place of origin.
“It is obvious that they skin the chicken and then throw the skin into the water. Even food boxes and other garbage they just throw into the canal…and this is an everyday thing,” said a concerned Ross.
And in order to have the issue addressed, he disclosed that Red Thread had inked several letters to the City Council. However, no response has been forthcoming, nor was any action taken to arrest the problem.
Ross related that even some residents of the area are allowed to dump waste along the side of the canal and nothing is done by the Solid Waste Department which is located a stone’s throw away from the scene.
It was disclosed that officials from the city department have never bothered to look into the very visible situation and in fact have been accused of contributing to the dilemma by dumping bottles into the canal themselves.
However, when this newspaper contacted Deputy Mayor Robert Williams yesterday he informed that he was never aware of such a situation. According to Williams, the situation is one that should have been gaining the attention of the Public Health Department of the municipality. As such he noted that he intends to pass on the information to the relevant department so that an investigation could commence.
He also promised to visit the area yesterday to determine the gravity of the reported situation.
