General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe during a press conference to review the performance of the Pre-Cadet team that participated in the recently concluded Caribbean Championships disclosed that the Body is extremely pleased with the results.
Guyana finished third overall with 1 gold and 6 bronze medals behind Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic at the event which was played in Barbados.
According to the General Secretary, the results of the Boys 10 and under was very revealing, adding that it shows there is an abundance of talent at the junior level and if the returns are weighed in the context of the teams that competed in the championships then the analysis becomes accurate.
“I’m not saying that a lot more could not have been achieved, but we are encouraged by their performance and very shortly a committee will meet to discuss what are some of the ingredients needed that can guarantee continued success,” Munroe said.
He pointed out that the two countries (Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic) that finished ahead of Guyana had very well co-ordinated programmes and even organises overseas stints for some of their most promising players.
Munroe indicated that among the plans identified to fast track the targeted development of the players include, having a senior player adopt one of the juniors to help improve their skills as well as the consideration to expose them to higher level training stints.
Touching on what sort of impact the performance might have provided for the sport, Munroe said he believed it will certainly offer more prominence to the game, adding that it also shows that the Association is doing something right.
“Given the level of talent there is right now, it becomes vitally important for us to put systems in place to ensure that that talent is carefully and properly nurtured,” he thoughtfully expressed.
