Approximately nine days prior to its Post Emancipation Day Horserace Meeting, scheduled for the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club (KMTC), on Sunday August 30, organizers received a timely boost from a member of the corporate community to facilitate the prizes for one of the events on the day’s card.
Yesterday morning, at a simple ceremony at his Camp Street business place, Chairman of the International Pharmaceutical Group of Companies (IPA), Lloyd Singh donated the first prize of $180,000 and the Clear Water Trophy to Justice Cecil Kennard at his Camp Street office. The donation would go to the winner of the 2 years old race over 5 furlongs. The second place finisher wins half that amount while the third and fourth places gallop off with $45,000 and $22,500, respectively.
The race would be contested under the ‘Clear Water’ label and during yesterday’s handing over ceremony Singh reiterated that his entity, which entered into a sponsorship arrangement with manager of the KMTC, Justice Cecil Kennard, has been supporting horseracing for eight years now.
He said that when he was first approached to render assistance, he did not hesitate to acquiesce to the request since his organization enjoys a favourable business relationship with the Berbice community. He said that he was merely acknowledging such support by giving back to the community. “It gives me great pleasure to be able to repay the supporters in Berbice for their staunch support over the years,” Singh said.
In response Justice Kennard relayed deep gratitude to his benefactor while acknowledging the value of such support. “The KMTC is indeed grateful for this level of assistance. We believe that no sports programme could be successful without such corporate intervention,” he said while reemphasizing the staunch support rendered by Clear Water over the years. Group accountant of the IPA, Reginald Persaud handed over the donation on behalf of his organization.
Justice Kennard was also instrumental in encouraging the support of the Kharaj family of New York. ‘Show Boy,’ as the sponsor is popularly known, is sponsoring the race for the three year old horses which amounts to some $375,000 with the winner carting off the lion’s share ($200,000 and a trophy).
Trophy Stall of Bourda Market has also chipped in with a trophy for the champion jockey while another family residing in the USA, the Seegobins, will donate trophies for the champion trainer and the runner up jockey.
