The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has launched an investigation into the complaint made by Information Liaison to the President, Kwame McCoy, against Kaieteur News Columnist, Freddie Kissoon.
In an official complaint to the ERC, McCoy is alleging that Kissoon in one of his columns, titled, “Ten Years of Jagdeo – Faustian Journey,” exhibited racist behaviour when he associated him (McCoy) with a monkey.
In a press statement issued to the media yesterday, the ERC urged Guyanese, particularly media operatives, to refrain from practicing racist behaviour in their reporting and writing since it is against the law.
The Commission also reiterated that persons who have been discriminated against on the basis of ethnicity or religion should report this to the ERC where an investigation will be conducted.
“The ERC continues to urge all Guyanese to live in love and unity as we strive to promote harmony and good relations in Guyana,” the statement noted.
In a letter sent to all news dailies recently in connection with Kissoon’s column, McCoy stated that the column contained language that was unambiguously offensive and repugnant because it dredges up an age-old association between black people and primates.
“The racist connection between black people and primates are of the past, but holds deep and immediate social implications even today because it reinforces the common, demeaning and dehumanising imagery,” McCoy stated in his letter.
