Dear Editor,
I have been waiting (in vain it seems) to hear what PNC members from Region Three and PNC members, in general, have to say about the resignation of PNC Parliamentarian Mervyn Williams from the office of Chairman of the Party in Region Three.
Am I to believe that people are afraid to speak out against the racist remarks which Williams says he had to endure? Or is it that people are afraid to tell Mr. Robert Corbin that he has once again messed up?
After SN carried the ugly story of Williams’ resignation, Corbin quickly sought to shut down the issue by citing the litany of complaints that, according to him, members allegedly made about the absence of adequate representation. His response to questions raised at the press conference and reported in the press, gives the impression that Corbin actually believes the things he told the media about MP Williams. It appears that Corbin has forgotten that Williams, up to recently, was the most visibly hard working PNC Member of Parliament.
Williams is the person who has shown Guyanese the so-called “Plastic City” for the first time.
He walked that community, highlighting the difficulties under which citizens lived. He walked the flood-hit areas in Region Three visiting communities such as Goed Fortuin, La Jalousie, Pouderoyen and Windsor Forest. Nation Watch brought his work into our homes.
Williams visited communities where water did not flow through taps and advocated for those communities to be supplied with potable water. Some have received water while others still wait. De Kinderen, Long Pond, Meten-Meer-Zorg and Bagotville are examples of communities for which he advocated. He and James Mc Allister pushed the government to speed up the construction of wells at La Grange and Meten-Meer-Zorg.
Williams exposed the government fearlessly on hundreds of issues ranging from corruption, Transport and Harbours Department’s sloppy service to Region Three, discrimination (including the area of house lot distribution and award of contracts to inferior infrastructural works.)
His work on the television show Nation Watch (Cross Talk) brought back some much needed respectability to the PNC’s public image.
Since he is no longer there, the show is back to its rubbish bin quality. Corbin should tell the viewers why Williams was removed from Nation Watch. Is it because he was beginning to grow in popularity?
Is it because none Blacks in the PNC should not grow in popularity as quickly as Williams has grown?
Does Corbin expect that non Blacks will be attracted to “his” PNC after the way Williams, Ming, the three Khans (Jerome, Kads and Ricky) and several others were treated?
It is time for people like Mervyn Williams to be allowed to grow in the PNC and for people like Robert Corbin to go and allow the Party to breathe once again.
