“Pleased” with works
Ravi Narine, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), is now the Project Manager of SRKN’gineering Consultants, the civil works supervisory consultants looking over multi-million-dollar drainage and irrigation projects in Regions Three, Four and Six.
These include the two contracts awarded to Essequibo contractor, Roopan Ramotar, popularly known as ‘Fowl Cock.’
These are Vergenoegen/Bonasika, East Bank Essequibo and Den Amstel/Fellowship, West Coast Demerara valued at $385 million; and Golden Grove/Victoria, valued at $202 million.
SRKN’gineering Consultants was awarded the supervisory contract of $76 million.
According to the contractor, his contracts include the building of 31 drainage and irrigation structures, repairing 32 bridges, building two new bridges and rehabilitating 19.7 kilometers of fair weather roads.
Ramotar received his contracts on April 21, detailing a timeline of 20 months.
On Friday he said that he intends to complete the work ahead of schedule.
Narine said that while his firm has not yet signed off on the projects which have been completed, he was “pleased with the progress.”
This was after he had inspected seven secondary irrigation regulators that control the main canals and the secondary canals so farmers can have access to water for their farmlands.
These projects fall within Lot 1 contract awarded to Ramotar. Under this lot, a total of 56 drainage and irrigation structures are slated for rehabilitation, together with the replacement of 36 bridges and the re-construction of 26 kilometres of road.
When Kaieteur News asked contractor Ramotar what the re-construction of the roads involved, he said these were fair weather roads that “you just grade and shape.”
Narine served for a short period with the NDIA, the successor body to the National Drainage and Irrigation Board, on which he served as chairman for many years.
He told Kaieteur News that the SKRN’gineering firm is owned by his brother, who is away for a while and so he has stepped in as Project Manager.
