Last November, a production called “Nothing to Laugh About” opened to sold-out audiences at the Theatre Guild Playhouse, Linden and New Amsterdam, and continued well into 2009 at the National Cultural Centre, Kildonan, and some East Coast Demerara locations.
This year by popular demand, “Nothing to Laugh About” is back at the National Cultural Centre with performances scheduled over three days from August 28.
Theatre fans would recall the frenzied rush for tickets last year when many persons were unable to get their hands on any. The evening of the first holdover, patrons thronged the doors of the National Cultural Centre only to be informed that all tickets were sold out days ago.
According to writer and producer Maria Benschop, it is quite advisable to pick up tickets early. Tickets are available at Giftland Office Max, Matt’s Record Bar, Nigel’s Supermarket, Johnny P Supermarket and the National Cultural Centre and are selling at $600, $1000 and $1200.
“Nothing to Laugh About” is a satirical compilation of skits which focuses on the humorous aspect of societal issues such as infidelity, homosexuality, politics, corruption, marriage, etc.
Mrs. Benschop also said that this year has been rich with controversial events that have all contributed to her inspiration in penning the pieces for the show. She says that this year is even more challenging than last year since she is also assuming the mantle of director but is confident of success once again.
The cast for ‘Nothing to Laugh About II” includes stellar performers such as Richard Naraine, Rajan Tiwari, Joel Fraser, Imran Kazim, Clemencio Godette, Gerard Gilkes, Simone Persaud and Shonette Somerset.
