More than 30 persons from Region 2, Essequibo/Supernaam, benefited from a workshop that exposed participants to the intricacies of chess when the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in collaboration with the Guyana Chess Federation, hosted a chess workshop at the Anna Regina Multilateral School Auditorium on Saturday August 8, last.
President of the Guyana Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari was also present at the function along with Secretary, Kenrick Braithwaite, Tournament Director, Irshad Mohamed and committee member, David Khan.
Moments before the workshop got underway, Regional Vice Chairman, Vishnu Persaud thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sport for the opportunity presented to the youths of that region to enhance their skills in chess. He reminded the gathering that sports officials are always willing to reach out a helping hand and last Saturday’s gesture was not the first and certainly would not be the last.
Assistant to the Minister, Dhaneshwar Deonarine pointed out that the sport had become virtually extinct in Region 2. He reminded that there was no representation from schools of this region at the resuscitated school championships held in December last year. Deonarine is optimistic that with the just concluded workshop there would be an enhanced level of participation from students of Region 2.
President of the Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari felt that the initiative was indeed a good one. He gave a brief background of the game noting also its ability to improve on the concentration ability of participants.
Meanwhile, Tournament Director, Irshad Mohamed was extremely heartened by the initiative. He said that this is one of many initiatives planned towards encouraging a broad based participation in the sport.
The workshop attracted participation from among teachers, students and media practitioners.
