“You don’t have to be a ‘star boy’ to play” – Ninvalle
By Edison Jefford
The inaugural Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Inter-Block Basketball championship is set for Linden at the end of this month. Kaieteur Sport was informed that meetings and planning are ongoing for the staging of the event.
Parliamentary Secretary within the ministry, Steve Ninvalle said yesterday that there was a promise last year to stretch the Inter-Block Football competition to other disciplines and the basketball competition will be the result.
“It’s (the Inter-Block basketball) imminent. We also have volleyball that is expected to be on stream in Lethem this month end. Our Inter-Block drive focuses on sport for everyone and it fits in to our Fit for Life policy,” he indicated.
Ninvalle said that he has spoken to the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) and the idea of the event was well received. According to Ninvalle, August 28 was set as the tentative date set for the launching of the event.
“We want people involved in some kind of sporting activity. It’s a good initiative and it is something that is initiated for the masses. You don’t have to be a ‘star boy’ to play,” the Parliamentary Secretary told this newspaper.
He added that anyone can come out and play for their street or block. “We’re taking sport to the people,” he said. The official format and other details of the competitions are to be released later but it has been definitely confirmed.
The Inter-Block Basketball Championship was apparently in the making for sometime as LABA President, Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid told this newspaper that the idea was conceived sometime ago and he knew that it would become reality.
“Steve and I talked about this before and we met on Monday. We have received it and we want to ensure that we get the communities involved. We were planning an Inter-Ward tournament so this is a timely intervention,” Hamid said.
The LABA President indicated that the idea was being discussed over three weeks and he is convinced that what is being conceived is bound to make an impact in Linden. He said that they are currently in the planning stages.
The event will definitely receive support in Linden owing to the town’s known support in the sport. Basketball is one of the disciplines in the Mining Town that is played in most, if not all, the communities with formidable teams.
