– exciting segment heads to Essequibo
The Promoter, Ian Johnson, ought to be rewarded for once again pulling off an impressive show when he hosted the 7th Annual Whatz Hott Guyana event at Thirst Park on Saturday night.
Johnson is promising a sizzling and volcanic feature when the show heads to Essequibo on August 15 at the Anna Regina, Center Ground.
Minus the fact that the show began some two hours after the 20:00 hrs starting time that was advertised, it was indeed an enthralling spectacle as some of Guyana’s most talented artistes took to the stage delivering packages, most of which found favour with the sizeable audience.
Johnson explained that some serious technical difficulties prevented the show from starting on time since technicians seemed unable to get the main microphones to function. By the time this was taken care of, the much anticipated Dancehall Queen showdown had to be omitted from the show because of time constraints.
The male finalists in the Dancehall King Competition however were showcased at the event. The Dancehall King and Queen finals are now set for a date and venue to be announced. Meanwhile, auditions will continue every Sunday night at the Blue Iguana Nightclub.
The acts on stage were mostly fantastic as was seen when Jorey Hector of Brutal Tracks Recording made his appearance. The large crowd screamed and waved their support as he performed some of his most rated pieces. His energy and raunchy stage style set the crowd on fire, leaving them chanting his name when he left the stage.
Then it was time for Marlon ‘Malo’ Webster to perform and he truly delivered to patrons their money’s worth of hyped entertainment. From the moment he hit the stage, it was sheer energy, exquisite dancing skills and suggestive slangs that had the females reveling in sensual abandon.
Many of them almost swooned when he left the stage to touch their hands or faces. This singer practically evoked a ‘musical firestorm’, almost climbing onto the roof of the stage as he tried to please his fans.
When he exited amidst thunderous applause and catcalls shortly after, there were smiles and beams of contentment on faces all around.
Abigail Bess did not do badly and had the crowd ‘rolling’ when she trembled and shook her ‘rear-end’, as she sang ‘Wine Pon the Bumper’.
Ernesta Wilson as usual pleased the audience with her performance and many mouthed ‘She was not too bad for a country girl’.
Montana and the Hip-Hop group called ‘Risky Records’ brought a refreshing change to the event, belting out catchy and throbbing Hip-Hop and R&B ballads.
The G-Money singers also were very impressive, unleashing a stream of sizzling soca pieces that were obviously enjoyed by the festive crowd.
Michelle ‘Big Red’ King proved that ‘big girls’ indeed can be ‘bootilicious’ as she sent soca fire raging through the audience. Her suggestive and so very sensual dance moves were well received especially by the male audience.
Reigning Soca Monarch, Shellon ‘Shelly G’ Garraway as expected sizzled, performing her trademark pieces ‘Touch Me’, ‘Work It’, ‘Babymother’, and ‘Talk yuh Name’ featuring ‘Fojo’.
Fojo himself delivered a blow away performance and as usual had the ladies almost swooning in sensual delight. Ballys and Wilbur ‘Lilman’ Levans were forces to be reckoned with and showcased vocal talent that is definitely headed for higher places.
Adrian Dutchin took the bull by the horns and blazed a trail long to be followed by many. Using his voice, good body, and undulating waistline, he showcased a package that demonstrated just why he is suited to represent at international forums.
The Mighty Rebel was phenomenal, using his usual charismatic style to entice and entertain the audience, many of whom craved for his insinuative lyrics.
Rajesh Dubraj and Mahendra Ramkellwan represented well for the chutney arena and belly dancers Ishwar and Sandella set the place afire with their saucy dance routines.
Guyanese Johnny Braff can be dubbed the best performer of the night, unleashing originals inclusive of ‘Hundred Pounds of Clay’, ‘Stop the Music, It Burns Inside’ and many others. Soon he had the crowd singing along in unison and some were even waltzing on the Thirst Park lawns.
When the show came to a closure some time after 03:00 hrs, all seemed contented and satisfied.
