Play in the Buxton leg of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport sponsored Inter-Block football tournament opens tomorrow at the Vigilance Playfield with one game kicking off at 4:00pm.
Coordinator Robin Phillips disclosed that this year the number of teams has increased to 10 from the eight which took part last year, indicating that the event is catching on and noting the value of interaction among villagers is integral for improvement at all levels of daily life among residents, especially among the youths.
The Buxton veterans and the Buxton Youth Developers, who are assisting in the coordinating of the event, are the new sides involved. Defending champions Middle Walk Back will be hard pressed to hang onto their crown.
Tomorrow’s opening action will see Buxton Youth Developers playing Vigilance.
The tournament continues next Sunday with a double header starting form 2:30pm with Company Front opposing Friendship Back, while at 4:00pm in the second game Brusche Dam collide with Annandale.
Saturday August 22 will see Buxton Middle Walk, the defending champs, tangle with Friendship, while on the 23rd Red Street take on the Veterans which will bring an end to the first round. The winners will advance to the next phase which will determine the finals places.
Phillips indicated that the Ministry has committed to ensuring floodlights for the grand finale on a date to be confirmed. The ministry has also arranged for the cutting of the Vigilance ground at which the event is being staged.
The MCY&S will also provide the prizes on offer in the tournament and are to provide footballs and other gear for the event. A keenly contested competition is anticipated.
Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry, Steve Ninvalle, has been instrumental in the staging Inter-Block programme from its inception.
