Revenue collection for the first six months of this year has surpassed that of the same period of last year, President Bharrat Jagdeo announced yesterday, even though he was not prepared to provide details.
Despite being “pleased” with revenue collection, however, he said that the real economy has deteriorated because of the global financial crisis.
But the President at a press conference he held at his New Garden Street, Georgetown Presidential Secretariat did not give details.
When asked about actual figures? The President did not have these to provide.
Revenue collection for the first half of 2008 was $42.5 billion, while a real growth rate of 3.1% was recorded.
Even though the 2009 budget was the country’s largest, that of $128.9 billion, President Jagdeo announced that the Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh was preparing to ask the National Assembly for a supplementary provision to carry out a number of programmes, including for $400 million of kick start a $2 billion revolving fund to help poor Guyana families, including the elderly, build homes of their own.
