Demerara led by a resilient knock of 71 by opening batter, June Thomas, defeated Essequibo by 180 runs to capture the Senior Inter-County Female 50 Overs Cricket Championships, when play concluded at the Police Sports Club Ground Eve Leary yesterday afternoon.
Demerara amassed 263 all out after winning the toss and electing to bat. Thomas, who opened the batting along with Devanie Sewnarine, lashed 2 fours in her innings. Sewnarine, who was dropped by Olivia O’Selmo off her own bowling, while on 40, was the next best batter, scoring an even half century, laced with 4 fours.
Prudence Lewis then sent down 6 impressive overs, five of them maidens, while conceding just 1 run for the winners.
She received support from Zaheeda Samdally (5 overs, 3 maidens, 9 runs for two wickets) to restrict the Essequibians to 83 all out from 31.4 overs.
Thomas and Devanie opened the batting and the former was eventually sent back, caught and bowled by Shenigh Calzan. Darlene Gale contributed 18 before she was adjudged LBW to Venita Sewsarran, while Abenia Parker who replaced Gale only managed to post 3 runs when she was caught by Venita Sewsarran.
Prudence Lewis was then sent back, bowled by Sheneigh Calzan for 25. Zaheeda Samdally was then dismissed by the LBW route to Olivia O’Selmo after contributing 19.
O’Selmo lost her wicket to a perfect delivery from Victoria Bacchus. She made 14 runs. Venita Sewsarran was next run out after posting a solitary single shortly before Joan Van Sertima went for a golden duck.
Latoya Smith was then run out without scoring leaving Akezie Thompson unbeaten on 15. Calzan was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 10 overs, no maidens and 4 wickets for 45 runs. She received support from Olivia O’Selmo (6 overs, no maidens, 35 for 2.)
Essequibo had a terrible start to their innings after opener Shaneigh Calzan was sent back after facing just three deliveries without troubling the scorers. She was LBW to Zaheeda Samdally.
Maxine Williams then went in but her stay was just as brief. She was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Samdally.
Maxine Williams was then sent back, LBW to Akazie Thompson, as yet another Essequibian registered a duck. Wazeeda Bacchus was the third wicket to fall and the Essequibians were in trouble at 25-3 off 12 overs.
Thereafter, there was a steady procession to the pavilion. Olivia O’Selmo was caught by D. Sewnarine off the bowling of O. Bacchus for 6; Kumarie Persaud was adjudged LBW after posting 14 runs. D. Sewnarine was the bowler. Altiya Newark lost her leg stump to V. Bacchus after making 5 runs while Wazifa Samad and Venita Sewsarran were both sent back without scoring, bowled by D. Sewnarine and L Smith, respectively. Venita Sewsarran sent back N. Khan, LBW for 3 while Rekah Roopnarine made a solitary single before she was bowled by V. Bacchus leaving Jessica Gonsalves unbeaten without scoring.
At the prize giving ceremony, held shortly after the game, Shamaine Campbell was adjudged the best batter of the tournament while Devanie Sewnarine was voted the best bowler.
Meanwhile, the selectors have named a squad of twenty players for encampment to represent Guyana in the Regional Women Cricket Competition scheduled to be held in Guyana from August 15. The players would be housed at the Cricket Board Hostel, Third Street Alberttown.
Those called up are: June Thomas, Devanie Sewnarine, Katana Mentore, Shemaine Campbell, Tremayne Smart, Prudence Williams, Tracy Miller, Zaheeda Samdally, Joan Van Sertima, Kumarie Persaud, Althea Newark, Olivia O’Selmo, Erva Giddings, Subrina Munroe, Darlene Gale, Abena Parker, Nikita Toney, Latoya Smith Wazeeda Bacchus and Tracy Glasgow.
