– Health Minister
Approximately 99 per cent of persons who need a kidney transplant are very ill because of a number of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases.
This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who at his recent press conference said that kidney transplant patients do not die because of the kidney they received, but simply because of the other illnesses that they had.
“So even if they get a new kidney, they are still very ill. Their risk of dying has simply been reduced by not eliminated,” Dr. Ramsammy told members of the media.
He explained that the kidney damage that some patients have and which necessitates a transplant is a by-product of a very serious illness.
“This is different from a person who has open heart surgery, since you are dealing with the illness directly. With kidney transplant, the problem is still there.”
The Health Minister said that persons may need a kidney transplant because of a direct assault on the kidney and when they get a new one, their health is restored.
However, thus far, all the cases that the Ministry of Health has been dealing with, include persons who are suffering from a number of diseases.
“So therefore when we give them a new kidney, we are only giving them a better chance…not eliminating their risk.”
Earlier in the month, 55-year-old Jairaj Singh, who had a kidney transplant at the Georgetown Public Hospital two months ago; succumbed at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the medical institution.
The man’s son, Biraj Singh, had donated one of his kidneys to his father for the operation to be conducted.
Before his death, Singh had to be readmitted to the hospital for several complications since the surgery.
Jairaj Singh’s operation was the first of two kidney operations which were conducted on the weekend of May 23, the second being 56-year-old Mohammed Sharrif.
Two more kidney transplants are expected to be conducted at the GPHC soon.
