Under the new law relating to driving under the influence (DUI), the police recently prosecuted two persons who were found to have been over the legal limit in terms of alcohol, after they were tested with the use of the breathalyser following an accident at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday last.
Bachan Balram, of Cummings Lodge, ECD, and Sheik Hanif, of Industry, ECD, were charged accordingly and appeared before Magistrate Yohhahnseh Cave at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
They pleaded guilty and were each fined $7,500.
The two drivers escaped serious injury when their speeding cars came into contact on the Rupert Craig Highway approximately 300 metres from the University of Guyana Access Road on Saturday morning.
Kaieteur News understands that the cars were heading east along the thoroughfare when one car clipped the other from behind, causing both of them to veer out of control.
So fast were the cars travelling that one of them ended up approximately 80 metres from the point of impact.
Both cars suffered extensive damage.
Meanwhile, the driver involved in the fatal accident at Half Mile, Wismar on Sunday, which resulted in the death of pedal cyclist, Winston Craig, was tested and was also found to have been over the legal limit at the time of the accident.
He is expected to be charged in court today.
