Guyana were 95-4 in their second innings against Barbados at the end of the second day of their 4th round TCL Group Regional 3-day Under-19 cricket match at Jamalco yesterday after conceding a 46-run first innings deficit to the defending champions.
Part time off-spinner Trevon Griffith took 3-22 to support Alex Amsterdam (4-42) as Barbados fell for 215 mid-way through the 2nd session as Raymond Reifer (57) and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich (47) featured in an 84-run 7th wicket stand for the Bajans.
Guyana lead by 49 runs going into the final day today after rain stopped play at 16:00hrs yesterday and with Jamaica beating the Windwards in 2 days to move to 36 points, both teams here must win outright today to stay in contention for title honours and hope that Trinidad and Tobago (36 points) don’t beat the Leewards outright today.
Barbados resumed the day on 83-5 still 86 runs away from Guyana’s 169 and by lunch progressed slowly but steadily to 165-6.
The left-handed Reifer was unbeaten, 2 away from his maiden fifty in his 2nd
year at this level, while Dowrich was with him on 28; their 7th wicket stand already worth 51 runs.
Kyle Mayers (18) and Reifer frustrated the Guyanese for 50 minutes before Mayers edged a catch to slip to give left-arm spinner Antony Adams his first wicket at this level and leave the score on 111-6 as the 41-run partnership was finally broken.
Amsterdam operated for all but five minutes in the first session and his flat uncomplicated off-spin again kept the shackles on the batsmen in sultry conditions.
Keon Joseph troubled the batmen with his pace early in the day but seemed to lose steam and was replaced by Adams as Amsterdam kept things tight at the other end.
Guyana’s leading spinner Totaram Bishun again struggled with his control and bowled a bit too slowly on a track with some bounce and turn as Dowrich (a little right-hander with good balance and a level head) looked very compact against the spin.
With a 50 and 40-odd already in the tournament, Dowrich was one of the few batsmen at this level willing to employ the sweep shot to good effect.
After lunch Dowrich swept Jonathan Foo to backward square to leave the score on 195-7 as the 84-run partnership was broken. Dowrich’s 47 lasted 87 balls 97 minutes and included 2 fours.
Griffith then bowled Jomel Warrican for a duck one run later before Reifer seemed unfortunate to be given out, run out after the wicket was disturbed by the keeper’s gloves as Barbados slipped to 206-9. Reifer’s 57 was decorated with 7 fours and came from 167 balls and 208 minutes.
Griffith then finished off the innings at 13:36hrs when Mario Miller (3) drilled a catch to Seon Daniels at cover.
With a deficit of 46 runs, Guyana began their second innings and Griffith and skipper Anthony Bramble (1) added 24 for the first wicket before Bramble drove Jeremy Marshall to mid-off.
Griffith again looked in magnificent form; pulling Holder high over square-leg for six after smashing Marshall for consecutive boundaries. Royston Alkins, who volunteered to bat at number three, looked very confident and got going with a spanking extra cover drive for four.
By tea Griffith was on 39, Alkins on 7 and Guyana 54-1; enjoying a slim lead of 8 runs going into the day’s final session.
After Tea Alkins (9) top edged a sweep to the keeper off Warrican at 58-2 while Jeetendra Sookdeo (10) clipped Warrican for 2 fours in succession before he was ‘bumped’ out by the 6ft, 6 inch Holder who captained Barbados in last December’s regional Under-17 tournament in Trinidad.
Sookdeo was struck on his arm fending, and hurt his back as he missed a hook next ball and then gloved a hook to slip as he was peppered with 3 bouncers in a row as the Guyanese lack of technique to the short ball was again exploited by the Bajans.
Fourteen runs later Holder induced Griffith to hook at a short ball for the keeper to take the leg-side catch to leave Guyana on 88-4. Griffith’s attractive 53 lasted 65 balls, 96 minutes with 6 fours and a six and took his runs tally to 348.
Griffith’s demise, just when he seemed set for his 2nd ton of the competition put Barbados in a good position to press for a win although the left-hander seemed a bit unlucky to be given out as the ball appeared to miss the bat.
Foo (10) and Amsterdam (1) took the score to 95-4 from 21.2 overs when rain halted the action. Holder has so far taken 2-28.
