Several Final year Students at the University of Guyana a week ago completed a women empowerment project in Sophia, where several persons were trained in capacity building, knitting and hair and nail technology courses.
At the end of the programme, all of the participants were presented with certificates solidifying their achievement.
The eight week programme was funded solely by the students, namely Samantha Downer, Gomattie Ramkumar, Pratima Dhanpaul, Amanda Perkins and Mahendra Thakurdat.
Speaking with this newspaper, Ramkumat pointed out that the group selected persons who they thought needed empowerment and apart from the capacity building aspect of the programme, the students themselves conducted the tutoring, given that there were members of the group that had training in the three skills area.
The skills taught were selected by the participants according to Ramkumar, who said that the list was longer but because of financial constraints they were limited to just the three.
The participants were initially 17 but because some of the women had teenage daughters at home, they were allowed to be a part of the programme.
“It was very costly but we did not regret a moment of it because we felt that we were doing something good.”
