Since his introduction to the sport four years ago, Group 2A driver Raymond Ally has improved leaps and bounds and in an interview with Kaieteur Sport Thursday said that with the acquisition of a brand new engine, he intends to sweep the series, when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Clubs holds its July 26 ‘Second Round of Champions’ Meeting at the South Dakota Circuit.
Ally, who started out as a rookie at the 2005 November Meet, has since made steady progress in the sport and is now rated as one of the most formidable competitors in the 2A category.
“I was very consistent in the rookie division where I gained a few second and third places, but my first victory came in the 2A group and this is because the cars are evenly matched and everyone is extremely competitive,” Ally told this newspaper.
The tall bespectacled driver, who pilots a Corolla AE 91, has decided to install a 4AGE engine, which he revealed will give him more power on the straights and increase his chances of doing well.
“I made the decision to change the engine because many of the other drivers’ cars definitely had more power in a straight line and this advantage made it difficult for me to dominate them,” Ally said. Questioned on who are some of his opponents to respect, Ally mentioned Chet Singh, Syed Hassan and veteran Jad Rahaman as among his main threats.
“Singh is one of the most competitive drivers in the group and someone who works on his machine to bring it to optimum performance and that is why he has one of the most reliable cars,” Ally stated.
Asked what he needed to tilt the odds in his favour, he disclosed that with the new engine and some fresh tyres, he believes he will feature among the top.
Young Ally said that it was his father Amar who first introduced him to the sport and is still his biggest supporter and sponsor.
He is the proprietor of Amar’s Machinery & Friendship Service Station on the East Bank of Demerara.
He has also enjoyed the support of Castrol Guyana.
