The Guyana Police Force has dubbed statements by General Secretary of the Caribbean Congress of Labour, Lincoln Lewis, in an article as libelous and has expressed the view that it is an attempt to provoke the Force into a particular line of action.
Lewis on Thursday stated that the Commissioner of Police had hinted to the fact that when protests are ongoing guns may ‘accidentally’ be fired.
The force yesterday noted that the police will abide by the law and categorically slammed Lewis’ statement about the police commissioner’s as “a blatant lie.”
The police noted that “At no time and under no circumstances did the Commissioner of Police make such a remark” and added that the Force does not have or ever had any such intentions.
The Guyana Police Force was responding to an article published in this publication on Friday July 17, under the caption “Union leaders, activist released on station bail.”
Meanwhile, responding to statements made by Mark Benschop “also alleged being threatened by Police Commissioner Henry Greene, and has brought the matter to the attention of the International Labour Organisation” the force stated that it is not aware of any conversation between the Commissioner of Police and Mark Benschop or any threat made publicly or privately to Mark Benschop.
The Force has taken cognisance of the libelous statements being made to the media and re-emphasises that it is responsible for upholding law and order and persons bent on disorder will face the full force of the law.
