Boys march confidently to semis
Guyana’s girls’ team sent out a stern warning to their opponents, when they completely demolished Bermuda 5-0 in the team semi-final of the 2009 Junior CASA Championships in Barbados.
After disposing of Barbados 3-2 and Jamaica 4-1 in the group phase, the Guyanese girls were in no mood to be generous as they tuned up for today’s final against Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinis surprised Jamaica in their semi-final, when Charlotte Knaggs upset Jessica Perkings to give the Twin Island republic an eventual 3-2 win.
That result means that the Guyanese boys had to get past Bermuda yesterday afternoon if the team have any hopes of retaining the overall title, as Trinidad are almost certain to take care of a depleted OECS team in the other boys semi-final.
The girl’s final is scheduled for today at 9:00am, while the boys’ final is scheduled for 12:30pm.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s boys advanced to the semi-finals with an easier than expected 4-1 victory over the OECS.
Jason Ray Khalil started things off for the Guyanese with a dominant display against #2 Under-19 John Henri Sweeney, but the much anticipated showdown between Under-17 finalist Kevin Hannaway and Alexander Arjoon never materialised.
Hannaway was dropped from the OECS team on the eve of the encounter, which allowed Arjoon to have an easy run against reserve player Romario Constance.
Then #1 Under-19 Raphael deGroot played exceptional squash to come from two games down against Jules Snagg and seal the win for Guyana. Nyron Joseph then made it 4-0 when he blew away Jason Doyle, before Stefan Joseph gave the OECS a consolation 3-1 win over Steven Xavier.
