As ‘Million Dollar Baby’ kicks off today
The East Coast Reunion ‘Million Dollar Baby’ Football Tournament kicks off today, at Victoria Ground on the East Coast, where Golden Stars come up against Ann’s Grove and Victoria Kings tackle Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in a double-header.
The first game that organisers dubbed a grudge contest brings together Golden Stars and Ann’s Grove from 6pm, while the featured battle is set for an 8pm start. The tournament was launched during the national futsal competition earlier this week.
In the feature game, former Kashif and Shanghai, Mayor’s Cup and East Coast football champs, Victoria Kings match skills with GFC in a match that promises to be exciting following Kings’ second place finish in the East Coast League.
Kings forwards, Orin Elias and Rolson ‘Crespo’ Morrison should play a leading role in the game with Shawn Samuels, Samuel Blackette, Mortimer Murphy and Clayton Wilson on defence and captain, Andrew Holder in midfield.
Their Georgetown opponents is known for surprising opponents over the years and should not be taken lightly, since they finished fifth in last year’s Georgetown Premier League. Peter Parks and Anthony Wilson will lead GFC tonight.
Golden Stars will be led up front by Randy King, Kwesi Halley and Joel Wilson, while Owen Adonis will perform duties in the uprights. The defence will be marshalled by Jermaine Spencer. Ann’s Grove will rely on Richie Barry and Carlos Wilson with Helton Pellew guarding their goal.
The tournament continues tomorrow at the Plaisance Community Centre and not at BV Ground as was previous disclosed. Bakewell’s Buxton Stars will tackle Western Tigers in what is expected to be another keenly contested battle.
Trevor Garnett is expected to lead Buxton with support from Pierre Joseph Reuben Morris and Sherwin Griffith as Western Tigers look to the dangerous Devon Millington, Kevin Gordon, Sherman David, Dewayne Daniels and Maxwell Pellew.
The Victoria Kings Football Club has organised the tournament that includes Team USA, Pretty Love Family and Cool Crew Promotions. Director of Sports, Neil Kumar and Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle are expected at today’s opening.
The tournament brings together some of the best clubs in Georgetown and on the East Coast for more than a million dollars in prizes.
The teams that will vie for top honours are Alpha United, Pele, Sunburst Campton, Guyana Defence Force, Western Tigers, Beacons, Fruta Conquerors, GFC, Victoria Kings, Buxton United, Bakewell Buxton Stars, Ann’s Grove, Golden Stars, BV/Triumph United, Plaisance and Mahaica Determinators.
