Dear Editor,
Guyana has a great combination of breathtaking and fascinating tourist destinations. One of the more exposed attractions is the Kaieteur Falls.
It has been recognised far and wide as the world’s largest single drop waterfalls. News of the amazing Kaieteur Falls has also reached many lands and Guyana being the domain of its location.
The tourism industry in Guyana, however small it may be is in need of a lot of help. The tour operators, hotels, resorts, restaurants, local airlines and taxis need to work together and not against each other.
The saying “it’s better to eat small and live long” needs to be applied to this industry. We undermine and slander each other because we want it all for ourselves. We care less for the pleasures brought to those visiting our magnificent sights, but more so for riches. In our plot for riches we are reversing all the work and vision that our true pioneers fought to build and achieve.
We need the Guyana tourism authority to stop displaying favouritism within the sector. We need the Ministry of Tourism to become more involved in the small businesses. They are the people, who are genuinely in love with Guyana and work hard every day to make our visitors happy. We need our citizens to start loving their country again and realise that there is a future in Guyana. We need to keep our country clean and teach our kids to respect and love Guyana.
Our first step is to make it easier to visit our main tourist destination, Kaieteur Falls. It is already hard for Guyanese, but now it’s getting hard for tourists. The local airlines don’t want the business they rather do a flight that would make them more money. The services from the airlines are always mediocre and complaints fall on deaf ears. Whatever happened to the service industry in Guyana? Does the popular slogan “The Customer is Always Right” apply to Guyana?
We desperately need help and this is a plea to anyone who is reading. Let’s bring the best out in Guyana; let’s start by bringing the best out in ourselves. I say we erase the hate from our hearts and start a new Guyana. Let’s remember One People, One Nation, One Destiny.
