A Chinese national yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, on two counts of stealing electricity from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
It is alleged that on June 16, and July 8, last, Caojian Hong allegedly diverted electricity from the GPL.
The accused, of Lot 1C Blygezight Gardens, rents the flat to where the stolen electricity was being routed. Hong, represented by Attorney-at-Law Maxwell McKay, pleaded not guilty to both charges.
McKay however stated that the owner of the premises should also be charged along with Hong, for the theft of power.
He added that the owner of the building does not hand over rental receipts to Hong, taking advantage of the fact that Hong does not know an adequate amount of English. As a result, the accused had nothing to show for the defense.
Hong was placed on $20,000 bail for each offence and will return to court on August 19.
