Despite the daunting prospects facing 47-year-old Alexander Village resident, Lilowtie Persaud, relatives are still hoping for the best, even though the woman’s condition has taken a turn for the worse.
Yesterday the woman was transferred from the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Female Surgical Ward to the Intensive Care Unit. This newspaper was told that the woman has fallen into an unconscious state and is currently on life support.
A metal device is at present attached to the woman’s head to help stabilise her spine. A medical report had shown that Persaud suffered spinal damage and it was determined that she was paralysed from the neck down. The woman’s brother, Vijai Manohar, had told Kaieteur News that some three weeks ago he was sitting outside his yard when the accident occurred. He said that his sister was standing behind him watching him play, when a car that was coming from a westernly direction suddenly veered out of control.
The car had missed the domino players and picked up Persaud and deposited her in a nearby drain.
Manohar said that the car uprooted an almond tree before coming to a halt after crashing into a concrete fence.
He said that a neighbour and onlookers picked up the injured woman and rushed her to the hospital, while he and some other persons approached the car, which was occupied by three young men.
The driver of the car has since been released on bail.
