Says sport being plundered for personal benefits
By Edison Jefford
Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club has criticised the state of the sport in Georgetown and believes that there are individuals within the hierarchy of the City’s sub-association who are responsible for stymieing its development.
The club disclosed its reservations in a statement to Kaieteur Sport yesterday. Holisworth Casey signed the document, which claims that the administrators of basketball in the City have somewhat monopolised the sport.
“Parties from within the basketball circles have contrived to stymie the efforts of other interested parties to bring structure to basketball by providing developmental plans,” the one page, no-holds-barred document claimed.
The club is of the view that it is being deliberately prevented from its role, which it says is to help provide programmes aimed at creating a “constant flow of players equipped to perform at the highest level of the game”.
“These selfish individuals are only interested in self aggrandisement and see basketball as a business venture and not as a channel for youths in Guyana to realise their true and full potential,” the straightforward statement noted.
The document did not name the ventures and individuals it was alluding to, but the GABA in conjunction with major sponsors just came off a very successful Inter-Ward Basketball tournament following heightened activity.
Georgetown is abuzz with basketball and related activities since Trevor Rose took over as Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA] President. However, Pepsi Sonics see this buzz as administrators’ personal development.
“There are a lot of basketball tournaments being perennially run all year round by only those who have an interest in furthering their agendas,” the document held, in an indirect swipe at the leadership of the sport in Georgetown.
“Basketball requires men and women with big minds, integrity and selflessness, who are committed to the utmost to raise the standards of basketball from the ground all the way to the top. They must step forward now,” it continued.
The report claimed that Sonics are “appalled”, as a major stakeholder, at the state of basketball in Georgetown. The statement is definitely expected to raise eyebrows and perhaps evoke a response from senior administrators.
