Many persons have been moved by the appeal to assist four children whose mother perished in a road accident leaving them in the sole care of their drug addicted father.
Both individuals and organisations have responded to the call by contributing both small and large sums of money which will go towards the upkeep of the children.
But maybe the most touching contribution came from a very unlikely source.
The ranks of the Presidential Guard were so moved by the plight of the children, that they willingly pooled their resources and came up with a whopping $72,000 which was handed over to the Publisher of the Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall towards the motherless children fund.
“When you read about something like this, it only moves you to throw out your heart,” said Eustace Trotman a member of the Presidential Guard.
According to Trotman, it did not take any convincing for ranks to pitch in to contribute to the fund.
He said that when it was mentioned, everyone, without hesitation contributed various sums.
Kaieteur News Publisher, Glenn Lall, was so moved by the contribution by the President’s guards that he personally accepted the donation.
Mr. Lall said that helping those in need is something that persons should not stop to think about doing and that the gesture by the Presidential Guards shows that there are still sections of the society that still care about the plight of others.
“These are just ordinary Presidential Guards and yet they can find it in their hearts without even being asked. I hope that our political leaders take a leaf out of the book of these Presidential Guards. They are the ones who should have done this,” Mr. Lall said.
He explained that at first, he just thought about helping the bereaved family with the burial of the mother.
However in hindsight, he felt that something should also be done to help the children grow up with the minimum of suffering.
He invited others to come on board and the response since then has been overwhelming.
To date, the fund stands at over $1.4M and contributions are still pouring in.
Mr. Lall recalled receiving a telephone call from a Guyanese woman residing in the Turks and Caicos Islands who wanted to make a contribution.
Initially the woman had pledged US$100 but waited an entire week until her next payday to increase her contribution.
“It is unfortunate that we have to wait for a tragedy to give a helping hand. Maybe if this was done before we would not have had this tragedy,” said Jillian Moore of the Presidential Guard.
“We need to look around and see where help is needed,” the Kaieteur News Publisher added.
He disclosed that he plans to launch in the next two weeks, a charitable organisation to help the poor and disadvantaged.
