The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has had cause to turn in one of its own to the police following allegations of a scam.
Public Relations Officer, Rawle Aaron, in a release issued yesterday, said that it is alleged that the employee, a Meter Survey Contractor, was presenting himself as a disconnection officer and not in his official capacity to residents on the West Bank of Demerara.
This newspaper understands that in the assumed capacity the contractor was able to solicit money from unsuspecting residents.
However, reports of the unlawful activities reached GWI’s Pouderoyen office on Friday June 12, 2009, prompting an investigation that was carried out by the water entity’s Internal Security Consultant.
The investigators took a head-on approach which saw the alleged scam artist being confronted by his accusers.
According to the release during the confrontation the accused confessed that he had in fact solicited sums from one customer in order not to effect a disconnection. It was also ascertained that he sought to solicit monies from other persons but was unsuccessful.
The employee has since been detained by officers at the Wales Police Station and will be placed before the Court after the relevant statements are tendered by GWI officials in the Division and the Police complete their investigations, the release added.
In the meantime, GWI is advising customers to be vigilant and demand that all GWI officials transacting business on the company’s behalf identify themselves appropriately before accessing their premises.
The PRO, in the release, emphasised that the task any official is certified to conduct must coincide with the credentials presented.
