Jun 24, 2009 Letters
Dear Editor,
Emile Mervin’s letter in the SN on June 23, 2009 is absolutely petty. He compares Suriname to Guyana claiming that Guyana had not accomplished anything. However, since Guyana is democratic and we have freedom of expression and are allowed to state our opinions, I now would like to state mine.
He boasts about Guyana’s neighbour to the east, Suriname, about its feature in a New York newspaper.
I wonder who is responsible for such an article; I guess it’s probably some proud Suriname citizen, who attests to the economical gains of their country. From the Mervin’s explanation of the feature it seems to me that Surinamese are not petty nitpickers unlike us Guyanese who are always in or looking for an unnecessary squabble.
Guyana has made massive developments but because of the ignorance that prevails among our own people, we refuse to accept these developments; because of what? Hate? Hate for our own people? Hate for our own country?
The sickness of nitpicking is so rampant, that it irks me as to why these people like Mervin waste so much valuable time trying to deplete Guyana’s economy instead of contributing to the development of this country. Is it to gain recognition and credibility? If that is so, then their approach is seriously flawed.
These Americanized Guyanese are very presumptuous and irresponsible in their thinking that they forget about the contentious and sensitive environment we live in. Mervin enjoys his ‘life in London’ (or should I say life in the United States) talking as if he knows about the progress made and is making in this country. These nitpickers are guilty of segregating our people, harnessing animosity among our people which all contribute to the lessening of our young striving nation. Mervin could care less about the ordinary people in Guyana; instead he is more concerned about making his name. How selfish!!
Mervin and his bunch are guilty of making their ignorant assumptions on slanted information from people who are in search of political power and would do anything to achieve it, even if it means sacrificing the Guyanese to get it. Mervin labels the letters that push the truth about Guyana’s economic development as spins.
Why? Because the truth hurts and it is disrupting him and his bunch from achieving their agenda!
Instead of making positive proposals and preach to our people to work together to boost Guyana’s development, they prefer to recklessly scatter their ignorant brains upon the Guyanese, brainwashing and confusing them to carry out their objectives. Once again, I say, how selfish!
I am not against Mr. Mervin’s right to make opinions, but to selfishly hurt the ordinary Guyanese and to willfully deplete Guyana’s gains is wrong.
