Barbados and West Indies Under-19 cricketers Shamarh Brooks and Rashidi Boucher will get the chance to hone their skills in English conditions for Middlesex and Surrey respectively over the next three months.
This is as a result of a developmental programme arranged by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in conjunction with the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA). The pair left Barbados on Thursday for London.
“This is a programme, which was agreed to during the England tour to Barbados by BCA president Joel Garner and Mike Gatting, who I understand is employed in the capacity of developing youth cricket in the United Kingdom for the ECB,” said BCA board member Winston Stafford.
“I hope they will benefit as a result of this unique exposure. We (West Indies) struggled with the climatic conditions on the recent tour of England and I hope these young men will develop skills to cope with English conditions.” Both will be enrolled with the counties’ second XI teams until mid-September.
The 20-year-old Brooks, a middle-order batsman and leg-spinner good enough to score half-centuries off Sri Lankan and English touring sides, is relishing the chance to play in English seam conditions.
“It is going to be a wonderful experience. In the English conditions where the ball is going to move around a lot more, I think if we go there with the right intention, it is going to better our cricket,” he said.
“I am really looking forward to it. I have been playing in England from the Under-13 level and I enjoyed it then and this should be no different. I am aiming to put my best foot forward and come up with some good performances. “Watching the West Indies recently on the tour of England it was evident they were a young inexperienced side to the moving ball. This should be of benefit and hopefully I will come back a better player.”
“It should be an experience to remember. I am sure I am going to learn a lot from it and I am looking forward to doing my best. This stint in England is bound to do a lot for my cricket. Hopefully, this tour will pay off for me in a big way,” said Boucher, who turns 19 next month.
They are scheduled to return to the Caribbean on September 19.
