The Guyana 14-man squad for this year’s regional Under-19 cricket series in Jamaica from July 9 was announced yesterday and the touring squad and 6 standby players began a 2-week encampment in the city from last evening.
The squad has been focusing on physical work during the weekend camps and a three-day practice is scheduled to start on Tuesday.
Guyana last won the three-day title in St Kitts two years ago but have never lifted the one-day title although they lost the 2007 final to Jamaica.
Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble, in his second year at this level, has been named Captain and the squad includes four fast bowlers as Guyana aim to take their 12th title since winning their first in 1975. Royston Alkins has been appointed Vice-Captain.
Eight of the nine players eligible from last year’s competition have retained their places in the 14-man squad with Berbice fast bowler Keron Frazer the only one not to retain his place as the selectors went for the lively Essequibian pacer Ronsford Beaton who missed matches in the Inter-County series due to an ankle injury.
Beaton is now fully fit and joins the hostile Keon Joseph who played last year and the national Under-17 pair of left-armer Andre Stoll and Seon Daniels as the pacers in the side.
Openers Trevon Griffith and Jeetendra Sookdeo, leg-spinning all-rounder Jonathon Foo, Joseph, Bramble, Alkins, middle order batsman Seon Hetmyer and left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun are the players who played in Barbados last year.
The team with the most points will be declared winners in both competitions since unlike last year in Barbados, no One-Day final will be played.
The tournament was last played in Jamaica in 2004 and the Guyana team is scheduled to depart on July 7.
Coach since 2004, Evans feels the spin bowling department (traditionally Guyana strength) is not as strong as in recent years but is very impressed with the fast bowlers.
This is the first time that four pacers have been picked since 1987 when Colwin Cort, Linden Joseph, Barrington Brown and David Fingal were selected for the trip to Jamaica.
The Guyana squad: Anthony Bramble (Captain), Royston Alkins (Vice-Captain), Trevon Griffith, Jeetendra Sookdeo, Harrell Greene, Seon Hetmyer, Alex Amsterdam, , Jonathon Foo, Andre Stoll, Rajendra Naikbarran, Totaram Bishun, Seon Daniels, Keon Joseph, Ronsford Beaton.
Standbys: Keron Frazer, Dexter Solomon, Sahadeo Somai, Anthony Adams, Amir Khan and Ryan Rajmangal.
Where is the BETTER MANAGEMENT/RENEGOTIATION OF THE OIL CONTRACTS you promised Jagdeo?
