Raphael Jordan, 21, of 27 Paradise Housing Scheme was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that the accused, on June 17, armed with a pair of scissors, robbed Latoya France, of a quantity of items valued at $61,500.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was represented by attorney at law, Gregory Gaskin.
According to the lawyer, his client and France have been in discussion and they have agreed to settle the matter.
However, when the magistrate asked France if she was considering to settle the matter, she answered in the negative.
“My worship I was willing to settle the matter but now that I’m seeing him, I’m recounting everything that he did to me”, France explained.
France told the court that she was walking along Croal Street when the defendant approached her with a pair of scissors and demanded her to hand over everything.
“He push de scissors up to my ribs and tell me give he de f**ing money or else he gon stab me up”.
After learning that France had changed her mind, attorney at law Gaskin made a bail application.
He told the court that Jordan is a stranger to the courts, poses no flight risk, or interference with the virtual complainant.
Police Prosecutor Seetaram objected to bail and told the court that France is presently on vacation in Guyana and there is the likelihood if bail is granted, Jordan may not come back to court.
The prosecutor also said that due to the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, the court must deny bail.
Attorney at law Gaskin interjected and noted that his client at present does not have any travel documents. His client could be made to report to the police station whenever it is appropriate to the police, he added.
The lawyer even suggested that his client’s name be blacklisted at the airport so that he may not leave the country.
Bail was nevertheless refused and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on June 24.
