In 2002 Covent Gardens Secondary became the first Guyanese school to participate in the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers International schools cricket tournament in Barbados.
However, 2004 was the last time the East Bank Demerara school played in the competition and this year they make a return to Barbados as one of two local schools participating.
Coach, Andrew Allen is confident the teenagers will do well. Allen said that while CXC exams have not allowed for as many practice sessions as he would have wanted, the team is a good combination and will ‘step up’ preparations from today.
The 20-man squad includes four players, who have represented Guyana at the Under-15 level and will be captained by Demerara Under-19 batsman Shameer Fazal.
Talented National Under-15 left-handed batsman Brian Sattaur and Guyana Under-15 Keeper Sarfraz Esau are expected to be among the guest players in the side, which will be managed by Kamlawattie Balroop. Former Guyana Under-15 player Jagdesh Bishun and younger brother of National Under-19 spinner Totaram Bishun is expected to Captain the team.
The players will practice at the Providence Sports Club ground and depart Guyana on June 28 return on July 27.
“The competition starts on July 6, but we are going early and will play four warm-up matches before the tournament begins,” Allen said.
The team will be traveling with leading regional carrier Caribbean Airlines and anyone desirous of offering sponsorship to help offset the cost of Covent Garden’s trip can contact Balroop at the school on telephone number 265-4345 or deposit their financial contribution at Republic bank account # 137-461-0.
School of the Nations is the other school participating in the competition this year and they are expected to leave Guyana on July 3.
