Senior player of Old Fort Ivor Thompson said that even though Old Fort is mathematically out of contention to win this year’s Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Hockey Tournament, he still feels that a victory against GCC tomorrow is extremely important.
Thompson reasoned that a win against the host team could provide much needed momentum for the club’s future competitions, and to this end the players are treating the encounter as a serious one.
“This is a must win game for us if you take into consideration what it can do for our confidence, leading up to the remainder of the season,” Thompson said.
According to Thompson, during practice sessions, which were held earlier in the week, they were able to correct the deficient areas and make the necessary adjustments. Old Fort lost their previous encounter with Hikers; however, he was expecting a much improved performance against the homesters, who must start as favourites.
Old Fort would be relying on the services of the Simon brothers (Aderemi and Askofu), Thompson, Gavin Hope, Jason DeSantos, John Abrahams, Wayne St. Jules, Dwayne Alleyne and Dwight Sullivan along with goalkeeper Mikhail Smith.
Meanwhile, GCC Captain Phillip Fernandes in his comments paid respect to the opposition, stating that they are a team of surprises.
“They usually struggle with consistency, but it is not to say that they do not possess quality and that is why you have to always be prepared and very careful,” Fernandes pointed out.
He added that they are very formidable and would provide a stiff challenge for them.
According to the experienced player, “when you have players like Aderemi Simon in your line-up, someone who can change a game in a flash, you’re always going to test the resolve of your opponents”.
Fernandes pointed to the solid blend of skills and experience which Old Fort has, but it is just a question of getting some consistency.
Fernandes said that though the game is not a must win for them, because a draw would still keep them in with a chance of winning the title, a win could put a lot of pressure on Hikers when the two teams clash on Monday.
“At present, we are one point adrift of Hikers, but a win for us tomorrow would move us one point ahead of them and set up a showdown in the final game for the coveted trophy,” Fernandes mentioned.
Among those expected to feature in GCC’s quest for victory are Orland Semple, Kevin Spencer, Alan and Phillip Fernandes, Devin Hooper, Dwayne Scott, Damon Woodroffe and Michael Xavier between the uprights.
