Local cricket coach Oswald ‘Ossie’ Waldron migrates to the USA tomorrow and his club Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) honoured the 51-year-old with a plaque at a simple presentation at the club’s Thomas Lands Pavilion on Tuesday evening.
Waldron, who joined MSC in 1998, played a significant role in the development of most of the top cricketers in the club including former West Indies youth captain and present Guyana First Class player Steven Jacobs whom he coached as an Under-15 player. “I never played cricket at any high level but I worked hard on developing my coaching skills and getting certified and I feel a sense of pride every time I see a player who passed through my hands become successful. I work especially with youths and I enjoy seeing them improve and will always cherish the time I spent at Malteenoes,” Ossie said.
He said that the opportunity of personal enhancement is the main reason he is leaving Guyana, but added that he will always love his country and consider himself 100% Guyanese despite how long he live abroad.
Waldron, who has also worked with the Guyana Cricket Board, explained that while cricket might not be his main focus during the initial stages of his stay in his new environment, the establishment of the America Premier League (APL) 20/20 tournament and the possible qualification of the USA team for next year’s 20/20 World Cup in the Guyana, Barbados and St Lucia, could also open opportunities for him as a certified cricket coach in the USA.
Jacobs presented the plaque to Waldron and wished him well on behalf of the entire MSC fraternity.
