A Guyana Defence Corporal was yesterday charged and remanded for the indictable offence of rape, after he made a court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
It was alleged that Anthony Hunte, 29, of Lot 610 Block 22 Wismar Linden, on June 9, at Tacama, Berbice River, had carnal knowledge of a female without her consent.
The defendant told the court that he has been a member of the Guyana Defence Force for the past 11 years. He explained that he knows the virtual complainant and said that the two shared a relationship for the past year.
He said that on the day in question, he had planned to meet her because he had promised to give her “some money”.
Hunte told the court that after the virtual complainant arrived, she agreed for them to have sex.
According to the defendant, after he had finished the VC enquired from him about the money he had promised her. Hunte said that he told the young lady that he needed to go to the bank and she would have got it (money) later in the day.
He said that he returned to the army camp and saw the VC and his commanding officer in the yard.
Hunte told the court that he was instructed to pack up his belongings and ordered to report to the police station.
The man said that he later gave a statement about the allegation of rape. Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, confirmed that the virtual complainant reported the alleged rape to commanding officer at the army base.
She further explained that Hunte was taken to the police station where a confrontation was held between the suspect and defendant, and that he tried to escape through the station window.
The prosecutor said that the defendant jumped out of a clump of bushes and attacked the virtual complainant.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on July 17.
The matter was also transferred to the Kwakwani Magistrates Court.
